Kompetensi utama Beliau  adalah di bidang manajemen dan psikologi terapan. Pendidikan formal Beliau ditempuh di akademi instrumentasi nasional LIN/LIPI Bandung, fakultas psikologi UNPAD Bandung,management trainee LPPM Jakarta, program MBA IPPM Jakarta, dan program M.Sc. dari Jakarta institute management studies. Keahlian di bidang manajemen Beliau meliputi Bussiness Administration, Manajemen Fungsional (Manajemen Keuangan, Personalia, Umum, Pemasaran dan Produksi), keahlian bidang psikologi Beliau meliputi Sistem & Pengelolaan Bidang SDM (Pengadaan, Pengembangan, Kompensasi, Integrasi dan Pemeliharaan SDM), serta pembuatan Peraturan yang berhubungan dengan kepegawaian, Selection/Assessment/Personnel Mapping, keahlian bidang general affair(GA) Beliau meliputi Kesekretariatan, Adminstrasi, Humas, dan Rumah Tangga Kantor. Pak Awan Setiawan pernah menjadi dosen di program S1 di universitas Pasundan Bandung dan universitas nasional Pasim Bandung. Sekarang beliau dosen aktif di program S2 di universitas widyatama Bandung, universitas Maranatha Bandung dan STMIK-LIKMI Bandung. Beliau pernah bekerja di BUMN (Perum-Lembaga Penjamin Kredit), PT. RAYA INCORP (Holding Group Company), dan di PT. Gasco Brothers. Pak Awan Setiawan sudah sering menjadi trainer/pembicara/fasilitator untuk training-training industry untuk perusahaan-perusahaan di Indonesia, Beliau juga sudah sering sebagai konsultan melakukan advisor, seleksi/promosi dan juga assessment/personnel mapping untuk perusahaan di Indonesia.
