Overview

This course is designed to provide non-finance executives with a working financial knowledge to enable them to evaluate their business decisions against the financial impact. Participants will develop an understanding of how to use the information in financial statements to evaluate the performance and health of a business, how to evaluate the profitability of investments and how to optimise their business decisions through break-even analysis.

  • What is the difference between capitalising and expensing
  • and the impact on the bottom line
  • What is depreciation and what it is not
  • What is working capital and the working capital cycle
  • What is meant by net worth
  • What is profit and what it is not
  • What is the difference between operating, investing and financing cash flows
  • Do all firms have the same financial statements
  • How to use financial statements to detect liquidity issues

Day Two

Overview:

Day Two will apply the new financial knowledge gained in Day One. Participants will be able to use their financial knowledge to evaluate the performance and financial health of firms, judge the profitability of investments, and decide the optimal production levels for their business.

Using Ratio Analysis to Diagnose a Company’s Financial Health – making the numbers tell a story

  • What are ratios and their limitations
  • What is common size financial statements
  • What are the different types of ratios and what do they
  • mean – activity, liquidity, solvency and profitability

Evaluate Investment Profitability

  • What is relevant cash flows
  • What are the differences between Weighted Average Cost of Capital (WACC), cost of debt and cost of equity
  • Which discount rate should be used
  • What are the differences between net present value
  • (NPV), Internal Rate of Return (IRR), payback period and profitability index
  • How to evaluate investments with different investment lives

Breakeven Analysis

  • What is the difference between fixed and variable costs
  • What is the benefit and risk of fixed costs – operating and financial leverage
  • What is contribution
  • How to calculate breakeven
  • How to calculate margin of safety
